Contraception Consultation

There are a number of options when it comes to contraception. During a contraception consultation we will help you choose the most suitable form of contraception to fit your current needs safely.

The different forms of contraception we can offer include:

    • Emergency – Morning after pill
    • Combined (oestrogen and progesterone) contraception
      • Combined oral contraception pill
      • Evra patch
      • Nuva ring
    • Progesterone only pill
    • Depo injection
    • Implanon (“the bar”)
    • Intrauterine Devive (“the coil”)

Emergency

The ‘morning after pill’ is most effective within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse.

Combined Hormonal Contraception

    • The Combined Pill is taken daily. There are a large selection of pills on the market giving a large choice to choose from.
    • The Evra Patch is applied weekly to the skin and can be useful for those with a busy lifestyle that may forget a daily pill.
    • The Nuva Ring is inserted into the vagina and remains in place for 3 weeks. Again, it can be useful for those with a busy lifestyle that may forget a daily or weekly contraception.

Progesterone Only Pill

This pill is also known as the “mini pill” as it contains only one hormone, progesterone. It is used when combined hormonal contraception is not suitable and it is taken daily, without a break.

Depo-Provera Injection

This is a progesterone injection given into the buttock every 12 weeks.

Implanon

“The bar” is a thin plastic rod-shaped device 4cm long inserted into the upper inner arm. It contains progesterone which is released slowly over 3 years.

Intra Uterine Devices

“The coil” is a very effective long-term contraception which is inserted into the uterus and lasts between 3 and 5 years depending on the brand. It delivers a very low dose hormone that acts locally on the uterus which reduces side effects. It can also be used as a treatment for heavy periods.

Cervical Screening

We participate in the National Cervical Screening Program. The aim of this programme is to detect whether a woman is at risk of developing cervical cancer by collecting cells from the cervix which is found at the entrance to the womb. The collection of cells is known as a smear and although it can be slightly uncomfortable, it is not painful and only takes 5 minutes. If a risk is detected in these cells, the woman will be referred to the hospital for follow up care. Cervical smears are free to women aged 25 to 65 years when covered by the National Cervical Screening Programme. Register here with the programme.

*Additional €90 fee if not covered by National Cervical Screening Programme
